The bean paste is gently cooked, leaving some beans whole, so the flavour of the azuki is fully enjoyed with every bite. The wafers are light and crisp, perfectly complementing the bean paste. This popular confection combines substance with elegance, crafted using the skills of a long-established store.
Sodegaura Monaka originated about 100 years ago in Meiji 24, when Ichikawa Danjuro IX, a billiard companion of the then head of Shiose, gave the sweet its name. It was sold in conjunction with the kabuki play Shibaraku, and the Shiose banner served as promotion. Its deliciousness made it a huge success from the very beginning.
The wafers and bean paste are separate, allowing the monaka to be assembled just before eating, giving a fresh, crisp flavour that fills the mouth. Its long shelf life also makes it an excellent choice for gifts.
